Calibration of SPT trip hammers is increasingly being requested, to ensure that
they are performing efficiently and consistently in accordance with
BS EN ISO 22476-3. This standard recommends that calibrations should be carried out on a 6 monthly basis, and also after damage, overloading or repair. SPT Hammer Energy calibrations are also being increasingly demanded at the start of large contracts to ensure consistency between test results.
The energy of the hammer blow delivered depends mainly on the mass of the hammer and the drop height. A standard SPT hammer will have a theoretical energy of 473Joules. In practice thiswill not delivered in full, due to small variations in drop height, mass, as well as friction on the slide and energy losses at impact.
The purpose of the SPT Hammer Energy calibration is to measure by dynamic means, the actual energy delivered below the hammer and to determine the ratio (Er) between the real and theoretical energy. Typically this can range between 65-75%
If you have SPT Hammers that require calibration, this can be carried out quickly and economically using our UKAS accredited service, either on your own site, provided that conditions are suitable or at our dedicated SPT hammer test facility at our Warrington Lab. Simply contact us below:
