Noise Monitoring

The sources of noise and the implications that may result from elevated levels need to be considered in many circumstances. For instance, Local Authorities in the UK will not give planning approval if background noise from roads, railways or air traffic is above certain levels (PPG 24).

Noise pollution, particularly from construction sites can be a nuisance to local residents. Placing of instrumentation both prior to and during the works will offer assurances should any disputes relating to inconvenience arise.

Vibration Monitoring

Sensitive instruments and machinery often require special anti vibration mountings and foundations to illuminate or minimise externally generated vibration. Surveying the site will determine critical vibration frequencies enabling design of adequate mounting systems. Frequency analysis of the fundamental vibration of rotating machinery such as pumps and motors can be used as part of a preventative maintenance program.

EC legislation requires all employers using industrial equipment to carry out a vibration risk analysis. If vibration levels are above predefined limits preventative measures must be taken, including reducing operators' daily exposure time.

Wind Farm Surveys

Assessment of the possible noise impact of proposed Wind Farm sites is an important factor when considering environmental pollution, public health and amenity value of dwellings close to the site. During the planning stage of a wind farm, discussions are likely to be held with the local Environmental Health Officer with respect to agreeing acceptable levels of noise from the proposed site. The performance of a background noise survey around the site will help identify the dwellings that are most sensitive with respect to noise and the wind speed at which the greatest noise impact from the development will occur.
