New zone testing method used on Forth Crossing.

The number and size of zone tests carried out by Testconsult's foundation testing department has been increasing steadily over the past couple of years. Engineers were previously requesting tests with small loading areas and low kentledge requirements. It has now become the norm, however, for over 150 tonnes of steel kentledge to be transported to site and stacks of up to 4 meters in height to be constructed to verify foundations and ground improvements over a large area, increasing risk to operatives.

Zone testing on the Replacement Forth Crossing required 167 tonnes of kentledge to be stacked onto a 2.4m x 2.4m test area. By commissioning a special cantilevered load plate, the load platform was increased by 36%, but maintaining the same test area, resulting in an overall reduction in load stack height of approximately 50% thereby significantly reducing the height exposure risks to operatives.

The Testconsult manufactured SLT2 load testing system was used to monitor the whole test to an accuracy of 0.01mm.
